Parking lot striping is essential for organized traffic flow and clearly distinguishing parking stalls with markings for areas where different vehicles can park. A Parking lot striping layout consists of bright, hard-wearing striping for parking stalls, arrows for entrances and exits, and directional flow on parking lots. There is also signage for handicap parking spaces and clear markings for fire lanes.

What is parking lot striping and how its layout

The different traffic paints available for parking lot striping include water-based acrylics, solvent-based alkyd resin paints, solvent-based chlorinated rubber, among others. However, water-based acrylic line striping paints are preferred since they offer excellent durability, high brightness, and visibility on top of being eco-friendly.

Handicap stalls are required on all parking lots. According to the American Disabilities Act ADA, every parking lot should have enough handicap-accessible parking slots complete with handicap blue-white markings and metal handicap signs at each stall. The number is capped at one handicapped stall for every 25 regular parking stalls.

Some zoning laws require you to have a designated fire lane in front of your building. This designated area will have the words’ fire lane’ imprinted onto the pavement using traffic paint. Alternatively, you can spray paint the curb with fire lane red traffic paint.

Choosing the ideal parking lot striping line style

The color and type of paint chosen are based on personal preference. Traditionally, yellow is used for the stripes, but blue is getting popular with shopping malls. However, specific slots like handicapped stalls have their legal requirements for color, size, and shape. Some parking lot striping designs include;

  • Single lines-the least expensive, with a single line separating the car spaces
  • Double line striping-double lines approximately 1 foot apart from the centerline to centerline and boxed at the end. Preferred as it adds extra space to open doors and easier entry and exit for parked vehicles.
  • Round end striping-same as a double line but with decorative half circle ends. They require extra labor to be stenciled and cost more than boxed lines but add a touch of sophistication to a parking lot.
  • Custom line striping-for something unique to your business; Commonwealth gives you advice on what line striping to choose that stands out without sacrificing functionality. We handle the project from launch to in-service.
  • 90 Degree- it creates head-in parking; the vehicles usually park in a perpendicular stall to the curb face.
  • 60 Degree/ angled parking- the most common parking lot striping layout. It allows for more back-out space from the stall and prevents fender benders.
  • 45 degrees- similar to the 60 degrees, but the reduced angle creates tighter areas.
  • T stall- spaces run parallel to the wall or fence. The two outer corners of the car’s edge are marked with a T. Usually used for alleyways or against fences and walls.
  • Tandem parking; a parking lot striping layout that puts the bumper of the car to bumper, fitting two or more cars depending on the space. It is preferred for vehicles that can be moved.
