Patching is a cost-efficient way to maintain your asphalt paving and get rid of glaring potholes and cracks. A good asphalt patching improves your driveways and pavements’ overall look and safety while preventing further damage and prolonging its life. Potholes and cracks are repaired using an Asphalt patching mix containing polymer adhesive that serves as a permanent patch for the blemishes.
A cold-patch asphalt is recommended for non-commercial pavements. The hot asphalt filler is reserved for professional jobs in larger spaces or commercial property since it requires expert handling. Cold patch asphalt is perfect for fixing potholes in your driveway, and it saves you the cost of redoing the whole driveway. The difference between choosing a hot filler or a cold asphalt application lies in whether you’re willing to pay a professional and how big an area you need patching.
Some asphalt Patching methods include
Throw and roll; liquid asphalt is filled into a pothole and rolled over. It’s a quick fix done during winter or other adverse conditions where an emergency patching is needed.
Semi-permanent patches; requires surface preparation by removing water and debris then cutting back the area. The hole is filled with the patching mix and compacted with a roller.
Spray injection; specialized truck-mounted equipment blows out water and debris from the area of work. Aggregate and emulsion are then injected at high pressure with no compaction needed, preferred over throw-and-roll in adverse conditions.
Full-depth patching; permanent repair where excavation of 4 inches or more extending one foot to the surrounding area is done for a firmer patch. A tack coat precedes the asphalt mix then a backfill is done for thorough bonding.
The asphalt patching process is straightforward;
- Cut the edges and square them up; crack and remove the damaged asphalt pavement with an asphalt saw or a jackhammer to square them off
- Thoroughly clean out the area of all materials, debris, chunks of asphalt, and plant life until you have a solid base. Use a stiff broom or a high-pressure blower.
- Repair the foundation by topping up with coarse gravel and sand mixed filed an inch deep. Compress it firmly as you fill. Add half to a full inch of the patching product, then tamp down before adding another layer to eliminate air spaces. The last layer should overfill the pothole.
- Tamp down the hole with a lawn roller or a metal tamper if you don’t have a vibrating plate. Setting a piece of plywood over the hole and driving over it also works.
- The final step is a seal coat and line striping for a complete look. These steps can wait until the weather is more favorable.
