Asphalt milling involves removing the topmost layer of the asphalt pavement and leaving the underlying subbase intact. This is done if your subbase is still in good shape and only the surface layer of your asphalt needs to be repaired. Since only the top layer is removed and replaced, the overall cost is considerably lower than that of a complete reinstallation, and the process takes a shorter time.
Milling is essentially recycling and repaving; the worn asphalt pavement is removed, recycled, and repaved to;
- Restore and correct any errors on the pavements’ surface
- Create a consistent surface free of blemishes
- Remove ruts
- Improve surface friction
The area milled can be the top surface or as far as the entire depth of the pavement. It is then laid evenly to the same depth as the old surface. This process ensures the curbs, drainage, and existing structures are undisturbed. Since the sub-base is left intact, the new layer of asphalt is easily installed on top of it to give a uniform, smooth surface. Milling is cheaper, takes less time, and is environmentally friendly.
Milling or resurfacing preparation
The significant step here is ensuring the machine that is in excellent condition, from machine maintenance, drum maintenance, and recalibrating the leveling controls. Ensure that you have a suitable machine and crew for the job. Some machines are large enough to cut close to 15000 square yards daily at 75feet per minute. With a crew in sync, the asphalt process is much easier.
Operation
The speed of this machine determines the quality and quantity of the mill. A heavy-duty cold planer or machine trails a rotating spike-covered drumhead that digs into and rips the bituminous pavement or asphalt concrete to a specified depth. The asphalt is ground up and sucked into the center of the drum.
The milled asphalt is then fed into dump trucks through a series of conveyor belts attached to the milling machine. Water is applied to the drum during the milling process to control the machine’s extreme heat and control the dust caused by milling.
Once the top layer is removed to the desired depth, the surface is then swept and cleaned to remove dust and debris that may affect the asphalt binding later on. The reclaimed asphalt is mixed with new paving and laid to the previous depth. The old, rough asphalt base bonds readily with the new milled asphalt to create a new, uniform surface.
