Asphalt speed bumps are the most common speed bumps on our roads today. They are durable, do an impeccable job of stopping traffic, and only need resealing if installed well. Asphalt speed bumps are installed to slow down drivers and protect pedestrians. Despite being expensive to install, they are a permanent structure that’s hard to move or damage than other speed bump types.
Asphalt speed bumps are commonly installed in parking lots to maintain low car speeds, slow down traffic in residential areas and even private driveways. Installing a speed bump isn’t s simple as the regular parking lot paving job. It involves several steps;
Asphalt speed bumps Setting up the location
You first clean the area by blowing off debris or sweeping to remove any loose dirt, plant material, or stone. The road bumps are usually 2-3 feet wide and up to four inches high; saw-cut the area according to preferred size.
Mark out the dimensions and chalk line out the bumpers. Make notches around the perimeter of the speed bump. Keying the asphalt ensures that the speed bump has something to hold it down to the road surface, so It doesn’t get displaced-the notches are about 2inch. Tack coat the area using liquid asphalt.
Asphalt speed bumps Installation
Pour the asphalt onto the chalked area, spreading it evenly and raking it to form the speed bump. Lay down the first base layer and let it settle before installing the other layers. Use a rough rake first, then a speed bump lute, rake the asphalt to form the bump. Set it to a maximum height of 3-1/2-in, at the apex, and 18-in. wide.
Sweep the loose asphalt from the area and start pounding from the edge of the Asphalt speed bumps then up and over it. You can use a vibrating plate compactor and ensure that everything is set perfectly with no rock pockets or lines. Clean around the edges to prevent a mess and to create a uniform finish.
Add a seal of liquid asphalt to the adjoining edge of the installed Asphalt speed bumps to prevent moisture penetration. Clean up the area and leave the asphalt speed bump to cure. Cordon off the area to let the hot asphalt cool down-takes about an hour or two.
Wait until the asphalt is fully dry, then seal coat and strip the Asphalt speed bumps using heavy-duty reflective paint. And it’s done.
When preparing for the speed bump installation, check the health of the asphalt in the area, fix any holes or weaknesses, then overlay the bump, do several lifts if needed.
